Road Asset Mapping & Management

A local authority needed to address the decentralized management of road signs, traffic arrangements and traffic-committee decisions, which relied on partial information and manual processes. The solution included a comprehensive road-sign survey and the establishment of a central geographic system for managing traffic infrastructure and decision-making, creating a unified, up-to-date and accessible source of information for all stakeholders in the authority.

Road Asset Mapping & Management

The business story

  1. 1

    The Business Challenge

Managing traffic infrastructure in local authorities is based on thousands of road signs, traffic arrangements, regulatory guidelines and traffic-committee decisions that directly affect public safety and the functioning of the urban space.

In many cases the information is managed across several different systems, documents, Excel files and organizational folders, with no central source that makes it possible to understand what exists in the field, which decisions were made over the years, and the actual implementation status.

The absence of an up-to-date picture makes it difficult to plan changes, implement decisions, manage control processes and maintain consistency between the infrastructure in the field and the decisions made by the traffic committees.

  2. 2

    The Solution

A comprehensive road-sign survey was carried out and a dedicated GIS system was established for managing traffic infrastructure and traffic-committee processes. The solution included:

    • Full mapping and documentation of all road signs and relevant infrastructure.
    • Establishment of a central, up-to-date geographic database.
    • Management of road signs and traffic arrangements on a map interface.
    • Management of requests, deliberations and traffic-committee decisions.
    • Full documentation of the history of decisions and changes.
    • Tracking the implementation of decisions in the field.
    • Creation of uniform workflows for all stakeholders in the authority.
    • Report generation and support for control and regulatory processes.
  3. 3

    The Business Value

    • Creating a single source of truth for traffic infrastructure
All road-sign data, traffic arrangements and committee decisions are consolidated in one system, enabling work based on up-to-date, reliable and consistent information.
    • Improving decision-making processes
Combining geographic information with the traffic committees' workflows enables data-driven decisions and a complete picture of the field.
    • Reducing manual processes and errors
The shift from document-based management to digital management reduces duplication, improves data quality and streamlines daily work.
    • Improved control and tracking of decision implementation
The authority can track the implementation status of traffic-committee decisions and verify that changes are actually carried out in the field.
    • Improving public safety and the urban space
Quick access to up-to-date information helps identify problems, plan changes and implement solutions that improve road-user safety.
    • A digital infrastructure for future growth
The system serves as a basis for ongoing management, planning and development of urban transportation infrastructure, supporting future projects and long-term efficiency processes.
